The Spanish-based Air Europa airline recently added a second daily flight to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, in order to fill the gap recently left by Iberia when it decided to cancel its traditional route to Santo Domingo.

Passengers traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico – and who previously used Iberia – can now complete this route with Air Europa, a member of the Globalia Group, in collaboration with the U.S. airliner JetBlue.

Globalia president Juan Jose Hidalgo said that the airline “will take advantage of the ‘gaps’ left behind by Iberia.” Last February, Hildago also said at the International Tourism Fair of Madrid (FITUR 2013) “Air Europa will take over Iberia routes in Latin America.”

Hidalgo said that Globalia will strengthen its position by acquiring three A330-300 and A330-200 units.

The new aircrafts will begin operations in April, May and June of this year. In 2013 Air Europa’s fleet will consist of 14 long-haul airplanes. Next year the airline hopes to incorporate a total of 24 airplanes to its fleet.
